Peint en 1961, Ettore e Andromaca revient sur un mythe issu d'une longue tradition: les adieux d'Andromaque à son époux, Hector, qui s'apprête à partir au combat. À travers son approche métaphysique, De Chirico donne un souffle entièrement nouveau à cette scène impérissable de l'Iliade, profondément ancrée dans l'imaginaire occidental depuis des millénaires. En portant toute son attention sur le visage des deux amants qu'il prive de traits et d'expression, l'artiste dépouille la scène de ses repères habituels et rend le couple d'autant plus archétypal, universel.
