Diese Frühlingslandschaft ist während eines von Félix Vallottons zahlreichen Besuchen am Genfer See im Jahre 1916 entstanden und in sein Spätwerk (1909-1925) einzuordnen, in dem er zahlreiche Landschaftsgemälde malte. Dieses Bild der Anhöhen von Lausanne erwähnte Vallotton in seinem chronologischen Werkverzeichnis, dem Livre de raison, mit der Bezeichnung Paysage printanier, environs de Lausanne, 1916. Meist verwendete er bei seinen Gemälden, wie auch hier, Ölfarbe und Leinwand, auf die er sparsame und einheitliche Pinselstriche auftrug. Während dieses Aufenthalts am Genfersee bezog der Maler mit seiner Frau Gabrielle Vallotton, geborene Bernheim und Tochter des Pariser Kunsthändler und Inhabers der Galerie Bernheim-Jeune, Logis bei seinem Bruder in Lausanne. Bei dem Besuch im April 1916 traf Vallotton auch den Maler Ker-Xavier Roussel an, der zur Künstlergruppe Les Nabis gehörte. Vallotton schloss sich dieser Bewegung im Jahre 1892 an. Ebenso sah der Künsler hier den Maler Henri Manguin, der zu dieser Zeit in Lausanne lebte und dem Künstlerkreis Les Fauves zugeordnet wird. Vallotton und Manguin begaben sich im Frühjahr 1916 gemeinsam auf die Suche nach Motiven in der Umgebung des Genfersees. Zwei Gemälde von Manguin veranschlaulichen ebenfalls die Umgebung von Lausanne im Frühling. Sie könnten während einer gemeinsamen Exkursion entstanden sein.
Charakteristisch für Vallottons Landschaften sind die weich gerundeten, aussagekräftigen Farbflächen und die zahlreichen Diagonalen und Konturen der Berglandschaft, der Wasserlinie sowie des Wegs über den Rasen, die neben einer Langsamkeit der Bewegung eine grosse Ruhe und Friedlichkeit ausstrahlen. Durch die Umrisse verstärken sich ebenfalls die Gegensätze der Farbfelder. Die spaziergehende Dame in der linken Bildmitte dient allein der Staffage, denn der Fokus war auf die Landschaftsdarstellung gerichtet. Fernerhin gehörten die Wetterereignisse wie Wolkenformationen des Genfersees zu seinen präferierten Motiven - diese Frühlingslandschaft dient hier als ein besonders anschauliches Beispiel.
This spring landscape was painted in 1916 on one of Félix Vallotton's many visits to Lake Geneva, and is therefore classified amongst his late works (1909-1925), many of which are landscape paintings. Vallottons listed this image of the hills surrounding Lausanne in the chronological catalogue of his works - the Livre de Raison - as Paysage printanier, environs de Lausanne, 1916. In many of his paintings, and in this instance, too, Vallotton's use of oil paints on canvas was one of sparing and uniform brushstrokes. During this sojourn at Lake Geneva, Vallotton and his wife, Gabrielle Vallotton - née Bernheim and daughter of the Parisian art collector and gallery owner Bernheim-Jeune - stayed with his brother in Lausanne. It was on this visit in April 1916 that Vallotton met the painter Ker-Xavier Roussel, who was a member of the Les Nabis group of artists. Vallotton joined this group in 1892. It was here, too, that he met the painter Henri Manguin who lived in Lausanne at the time, and is associated with the Les Fauves group of artists. In the spring of 1916, Vallotton and Manguin set out to find motifs to paint in the surroundings of Lake Geneva. Two of Manguin's paintings also depict the environs of Lausanne in spring. His outlines underline the tension in the fiels of colour. The woman walking centre left in the painting is purely an accessory for the focus is upon the landscape. Weather conditions - here, the formations of cloud over Lake Geneva - were one of his preferred motifs, of which this spring landscape is a particularly picturesque example.
