Vernon W. Ruttan (1924–2008) was a development economist whose research focused on agriculture, technical innovation and productivity. Over the course of a distinguished career, he served on the President's Council of Economic Advisors, the Rockefeller Foundation at the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines, and as President of the Agricultural Development Council. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences and, from 1986, was Regents' Professor in the department of Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota. His interest in modern art and design was shared by his wife, and they collected works by artists they met and interacted with over the course of their travels across the world, including in India and the Philippines.
