'Nu descendant un escalier n°2' de Marcel Duchamp (1912), 1920

Ce tableau de Marcel Duchamp conservé au Philadelphia Museum of Art est une oeuvre phare de l'art du XXe siècle, qui a fait sensation lors de l'Armory Show à New York en 1913.
Ce n’est qu’en 1919 que Man Ray a l'occasion de photographier Nu descendant un escalier, lors de son acquisition par les mécènes de Duchamp, Walter et Louise Arensberg, qu’il avait rencontré quatre ans auparavant. Sa photographie accentue le sens du mouvement de cette peinture, rappelant les chronophotographies d'Etienne-Jules Marey et d’Edward Muybridge, qui avaient tenté de capturer le mouvement dans une image fixe. Gage de la grande importance de cette oeuvre pour lui ainsi que de son affection pour l'artiste, Man Ray en accroche une reproduction dans son atelier rue Campagne Première dans les années 1920, sur le mur en bas de l’escalier.

This painting by Marcel Duchamp, kept at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is a landmark work of 20th-century art that caused a sensation at the Armory Show in New York in 1913. It wasn't until 1919 that Man Ray had the opportunity to photograph Nude Descending a Staircase, when it was acquired by Duchamp's patrons : Walter and Louise Arensberg, whom he had met four years earlier. His photograph emphasizes the sense of movement in this painting, reminiscent of Etienne-Jules Marey’s and Edward Muybridge’s chronophotography, attempting to capture movement in a still image. As a testament to the significance of this work for him and his fondness for the artist, Man Ray hung a reproduction in his studio on Rue Campagne Première in the 1920s, on the wall at the bottom of the staircase.
