Cette déclaration de Joan Mitchell intervient à un moment important au cours de son itinéraire artistique. À cette époque, Mitchell tentait, à travers ses tableaux, de transmettre l’impression d’un paysage qu’elle avait gardé en mémoire. Dans ses œuvres, elle s’efforçait non seulement de reproduire de manière réaliste ce qu’elle voyait, mais aussi d’évoquer l’expérience émotionnelle et sensorielle qui y était associée. Daté de 1958 environ, Sans titre incarne l’épanouissement de son style expressif. Grâce à un coup de pinceau spontané, elle construit une tapisserie complexe d’arabesques linéaires, tourbillonnant dans un mouvement centrifuge en direction d’un vortex profond et coloré en son centre. La toile est enrichie de bandes de blanc épaisses et scintillantes, créant ainsi un captivant jeu de lumières.

Elle expliquait ainsi sa démarche : « Je peins à distance. Je décide de ce que je vais faire également à distance. The canvas is enriched by thick swaths of impastoed white, which glisten against the backdrop, creating a captivating interplay of light.
