Autoritratto (Gemma) provient de la collection de l’influent critique et historien de l’art italien Alberto Boatto. Né à Florence en 1929, Boatto est l’auteur d’ouvrages de référence sur des sujets aussi variés que le dadaïsme, Marcel Duchamp, l’autoportrait moderne ou la question de la couleur dans l’art du XXe siècle - sans oublier son texte le plus célèbre, Pop Art in U.S.A. (1967). Fondateur et directeur des revues cartabianca (1968), Senzamargine (1968-69) et La città di Riga (1976-77), il se liera d’amitié avec de nombreux artistes, tissant notamment des rapports étroits avec les représentants de l’Arte Povera: Giosetta Fioroni, Jannis Kounellis, Pino Pascali, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gilberto Zorio et Mario Schifano. Aux États-Unis, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein et Claes Oldenburg, figures de proue du Pop Art, lui ouvriront à leur tour les portes de leurs ateliers. À partir de 1971, Boatto enseigne par ailleurs l’histoire de l’art aux Beaux-Arts d’Urbino, puis de Rome, entre 1978 et 1997. Largement récompensé pour ses écrits, il reçoit pour son livre Casanova a Venezia le Premio Casanova en 2003. D’autres œuvres de sa remarquable panoplie figureront, du 23 novembre au 5 décembre 2023, dans la vente 20^th/21^st Century: Milan Online Sale de Christie’s Milan.

Entré dans la collection personnelle d’Alberto Boatto peu de temps après sa création, Autoritratto (Gemma) (1971) est un autoportrait exceptionnel issu de la série des Quadri specchianti ou ‘Tableaux-miroir’ de Pistoletto. Ici, l’artiste apparaît de profil, sur la partie gauche du support, tenant entre ses mains un portrait-photo de l’épouse de Boatto, Gemma Vincenzini. Cette composition surprenante est le fruit d’un procédé complexe de reproduction et de transposition, qui consiste, dans un premier temps, à calquer au crayon et à l’huile une silhouette photographique sur du papier translucide. Le verso de la feuille est ensuite collé sur une plaque en acier inoxydable, afin d’obtenir un arrière-plan réfléchissant qui happe irrésistiblement le regard du spectateur. Produite en 1971, année où Pistoletto finira par pousser plus loin encore l’objectivité artistique de ses tableaux-miroirs en imprimant des sérigraphies directement sur le support métallique, cette œuvre est l'une des dernières de la série où l’on peut encore percevoir la patte de l’artiste.

Nés d’un processus mécanique de décalque et de report photographique, puis apposés à une surface manufacturée en acier poli, les personnages de Pistoletto sont des présences fuyantes, insaisissables, aux visages en tout ou partie dissimulés. Généralement représentés seuls ou à deux, ils semblent enfermés dans la prison de leur corps, coupés du monde, indifférents au mouvement qui transforme leur environnement à chaque instant. En cultivant ces notions d’artifice et de théâtralité, Pistoletto se situe avec ses Quadri specchianti aux antipodes de l’Arte Povera, mouvement qui scellera pourtant sa notoriété, et qui prône au contraire un art sobre, aux formes non-figuratives et organiques, constitué de matériaux récupérés. Or au début des années 1960, Pistoletto rejoint d’abord les rangs d’un courant bien distinct: le Pop Art américain. Invité à participer aux côtés d’Andy Warhol et de Roy Lichtenstein aux premières expositions pop des galeristes Leo Castelli et Ileana Sonnabend, Pistoletto figurera aussi dans l’incontournable ouvrage de Lucy Lippard, Pop Art, paru en 1966. Marqués par un mépris très pop à l’égard de l’art soi-disant ‘Noble’ (un rejet qui irriguera bientôt les principes de l’Arte Povera italien et de l’art conceptuel américain), les tableaux-miroirs de Pistoletto témoignent d’un moment charnière pour l’art d'après-guerre, traversé par une profonde et fructueuse remise en question.

Figée dans l’éternité de l’acier, ici, la figure de Pistoletto semble égarée dans un vide que seul le reflet (et le regard) du spectateur peuvent combler. L’effet de mise en abyme obtenu par l’artiste contemplant à son tour la photo de Gemma - une image dans l’image - étoffe encore un peu plus ce jeu de miroir. S’en dégage une tension dramatique, une vision presque cinématographique dans laquelle le spectateur, à la fois sujet et voyeur, pénètre comme par effraction. Habité par la tension qui s’installe entre l’immuabilité de l’image peinte et la métamorphose aléatoire de la surface réfléchissante, l’ensemble soulève la question de la place de l’observateur dans la représentation du réel. Pour reprendre les mots de Pistoletto, ici, ‘le véritable protagoniste [est] le rapport d’instantanéité qui se crée entre le spectateur, son propre reflet, et le personnage peint’ (M. Pistoletto in Minus Objects, Galleria la Bertesca, Gênes, 1966). Condamnée à se faire et se défaire à chaque rencontre, à renaître avec chaque réverbération, Autoritratto (Gemma) réitère continuellement le propos de Pistoletto, en se faisant le théâtre de la fusion sans cesse renouvelée entre l’espace pictural et le temps présent.

The present work is offered from the collection of the prominent art historian and critic Alberto Boatto. Born in Florence in 1929, Boatto was the author of numerous influential studies from the 1960s onwards, ranging widely from the early avant-gardes of Dadaism and Duchamp through to the history of the modern self-portrait, the subject of colour in modern art, and his best-known work Pop Art in U.S.A. (1967). He also founded and directed the magazines cartabianca (1968), Senzamargine (1968-1969) and La città di Riga (1976-1977). A close friend to many artists, Boatto developed relationships with the vanguard of the Italian Arte Povera movement, including Giosetta Fioroni, Jannis Kounellis, Pino Pascali, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Gilberto Zorio and Mario Schifano. In the United States, he visited the studios of Pop practitioners such as Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. He taught art history at the Academy of Fine Arts, first in Urbino from 1971, and then in Rome from 1978 to 1997, and was the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2003 Premio Casanova for the book Casanova a Venezia. Held in the collection of Alberto Boatto since shortly after it was made, Autoritratto (Gemma) (1971) is an exceptional work from Michelangelo Pistoletto’s renowned Mirror painting series. A self-portrait, the work depicts Pistoletto standing to the left of the composition and holding aloft a photograph of Boatto’s wife, Gemma Vincenzini. For Autoritratto (Gemma), Pistoletto employed an elaborate process of reproduction and translation which began with tracing a photographic silhouette onto thin, translucent paper with oil paint and crayon. This sheet was later glued back-to-front upon a stainless steel panel, which creates a reflective backdrop that the viewer is compelled to enter. Significantly, this work dates to the year in which Pistoletto began to implement a further level of artistic objectivity into the wider Mirror painting series by screenprinting images directly onto the steel ground. As such, this is one of the final Mirror paintings to bear the direct hand of the artist.

Coming to life through mechanical processes of photography and tracing, and set against a smooth, industrial steel surface, Pistoletto’s subjects are withdrawn, elusive figures, whose faces are in whole or in part shielded from the viewer. Most often depicted alone or in pairs, they inhabit an isolated realm contextualised and recontextualised by the shifting world which surrounds the painting in the present. Dealing in artifice and theatricality, Pistoletto’s Mirror paintings are diametrically opposed to those hallmarks of the movement for which he is best known - Italian Arte Povera - which espoused the creation of anti-representational art from simple objects and natural forms. Indeed, it is notable that in the early 1960s Pistoletto was aligned with a conceptually quite distinct group: American Pop. Included in early Pop exhibitions organised by gallerists Leo Castelli and Ileana Sonnabend, Pistoletto’s work was exhibited alongside that of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and featured too in Lucy Lippard’s decisive 1966 publication Pop Art. Sharing in Pop’s provocation of so-called ‘High’ art, which would later inform Arte Povera, and anticipating also the onset of Conceptual Art, Pistoletto’s Mirror paintings speak to a remarkable art-historical moment and to the shifting function of art in the post-war era.

Staged upon the highly reflective stainless-steel ground, in Autoritratto (Gemma) the figure of Pistoletto is surrounded by a void which is made and remade through each encounter with the viewer. The fact that the artist himself is viewing a photograph - a picture within a picture - heightens the work’s self-conscious play with ways of seeing. Embodying a theatrical and even cinematic quality in which the viewer is rendered interloper and voyeur, it prompts a consideration of representation and spectatorship, and evokes a tension between the fixity of the painted image and the instability of the reflective surface. Indeed, Pistoletto suggests that ‘the true protagonist was the relationship of instantaneousness that was created between the spectator, his own reflection, and the painted figure’ (M. Pistoletto, Minus Objects, Galleria la Bertesca, Genoa, 1966). Each encounter thus makes the work anew, continuing Pistoletto’s project through an ever-shifting merger of pictorial space and real time.
