Exécuté le 23 août 1935, alors que l’artiste s’était réfugié à Montroig en Catalogne, Personnage fait partie d’un ensemble de gouaches presque abstraites que l’artiste réalise au cours de cet été fatidique. Depuis 1934, les œuvres de Joan Miró accusent un côté « sauvage » annonciateur des horreurs de la guerre prochaine. L’imagerie de l’artiste suggère un sentiment de menace sourde, notamment perceptible dans le traitement de la figure humaine de plus en plus déformée et grotesque. Dans une filiation avec les symboles peints du néolithique, le vocabulaire visuel de Miró semble composé de motifs calligraphiques transcendés en formes. Jacques Dupin, ami et biographe de l’artiste explique ainsi : « peu importe ce que Miró a entrepris de faire, son pinceau n'a fait apparaître que des monstres » (J. Dupin, Miró, New York, 1993, p. 265). Cette série d’œuvres est caractérisée par la présence de corps flottant sur un fond coloré, comme la présente gouache dans laquelle la figure, dont l’identité demeure non précisée dans le titre, se détache sur des zones de couleur orange, jaune et verte. Personnage représente en réalité un homme déféquant. Très empreint de culture catalane, Miró souhaite probablement faire ici allusion à la tradition locale du caganer ; cette petite figurine représentant un paysan, coiffé de la traditionnelle casquette rouge catalane, le pantalon baissé, était placée dans les Crèches pour symboliser la fertilisation de la terre, voire, comme c’est probablement le cas dans la présente œuvre, la résistance à l'autorité madrilène.
À l’aube de la guerre d’Espagne, l’artiste est déjà reconnu de ses pairs et de ses contemporains, et ses œuvres sont déjà par ailleurs exposées à Bruxelles, Ténériffe ou encore Prague. Ce succès, qui n’a depuis cessé, résulte en partie de son amitié avec le marchand new-yorkais Pierre Matisse, fils d’Henri Matisse, qui le représente dès 1932, et qui possédait cette gouache. Tous deux se rencontrent en 1930 et se lient d'une amitié sincère, laquelle perdura jusqu’à la mort de l’artiste en 1983.

The artist's imagery suggests a sense of muted menace that is especially perceptible in the increasingly grotesque and deformed treatment of the human figure. In the lineage of painted Neolithic symbols, Miró's visual vocabulary seems to be composed of calligraphic motifs transcended into shapes. This is how Jacques Dupin, the artist's friend and biographer, explained it: "regardless of what Miró set out to do, his brush could bring forth nothing but monsters" (J. Dupin, Miró, New York, 1993, p. 265). This series of works is characterised by the presence of bodies floating against a coloured backdrop, as in this gouache. Here, the figure, whose identity is not indicated in the title, contrasts with the areas of orange, yellow and green. Personnage represents a man defecating. Very much influenced by the Catalan culture, Miró probably wished to allude here to the local tradition of the caganer, a small figure representing a peasant, wearing the traditional red Catalan cap and with his trousers down, who was placed in the Nativity scene to symbolise the fertilisation of the land, or even, as is probably the case in the present work, resistance to Madrid's authority.
At the dawn of the Spanish Civil War, the artist was already known amongst his peers and contemporaries, and his works were already on display in Brussels, Tenerife and Prague. This success, which never flagged, was in part the result of his friendship with New York art dealer Pierre Matisse, son of Henri Matisse, who began representing him in 1932 and who owned this gouache. The two met in 1930 and forged a sincere friendship that would last until the artist's death in 1983.
