GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von (1749-1832). Götter Helden und Wieland. Eine Farce. Auf Subscription. Leipzig: 1774.

First edition, first issue, of a short satirical play which lampoons the German poet and dramatist Christoph Martin Wieland (1733-1813). In 1773, Wieland published his important opera Alceste, an adaptation of the Euripidean tale for the German stage. In Goethe’s response of 1774, he ridicules Wieland’s treatment of the Greek tragedy – which Goethe considered to be inauthentic – and has Wieland confronted by characters from the original as well as by Euripides himself. Hagen 59.

Octavo (152 x 91mm). With the final blank C3 (short repaired tears in B4-5). Modern calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece.
