In the winter of 1919, Cuno Amiet created a series of paintings depicting winter landscapes. As both his studio and place of residence was located in Oschwand, this region served as a backdrop for a large number of his works. In the catalogue of Amiet’s paintings, edited and published by Franz Müller and Viola Radlach in 2014, and in the online catalogue of the SIK-ISEA, the parallels in colour, style and technique between Winter Landscape II and a painting bearing the title Winter Landscape III, also from 1919, are outlined. As it is the landscape of Oschwand that is depicted In Winter Landscape III, along with the farmhouse of one of Amiet’s neighbours, it is very likely that in this painting of Winter Landscape II, it is also the countryside where he lived that is depicted.
