Symbole de l’interprétation de Duchamp vis-à-vis de la nature et de la valeur comparative des œuvres d’art, la Boite-en-valise est à la fois un véritable musée portatif et un ready-made. Duchamp a travaillé sur sa Boite de 1935 à 1941, une période charnière au cours de laquelle sont nées les premières idées fondatrices des mouvements en «-isme» que nous connaissons aujourd’hui. À cette époque, les conservateurs et les académiciens institutionnalisaient l’art moderne. Après la première édition exclusive de la Boite composée de vingt exemplaires signés, produite en 1941, Duchamp a continué de travailler sur ce projet pendant 27 ans, en produisant plusieurs versions successives contenant chacune des éléments ou des matériaux légèrement différents.
Parmi les objets contenus dans sa Boite, Duchamp semble avoir accordé une importance particulière à la qualité des reproductions. Pour les créer, il revisite chacune de ses œuvres en personne, en prenant des notes détaillées sur les couleurs,
pour ensuite les faire reproduire grâce à la phototypie et aux pochoirs peints à la main, deux techniques quelque peu obsolètes aujourd’hui. Ces méthodes manuelles et chronophages oscillent délibérément entre la production en série ou la reproduction et l’objet unique. Pour renforcer encore davantage l'ambiguïté emblématique de son œuvre, Duchamp demande par ailleurs à un notaire de certifier plusieurs reproductions comme originales.
Le concept de musée portatif - matérialisé ici par une valise qui pourrait transporter les produits du vendeur itinérant - est intimement lié aux expériences vécues par Duchamp au cours de l’occupation allemande en France. Afin d'obtenir les matériaux nécessaires à la construction de ses Boites, l'artiste avait en effet besoin d’un laissez passer délivré par les autorités allemandes. Pour obtenir ce papier, il s’est fait passer pour un marchand de fromages ambulant transportant ses marchandises dans une valise spéciale. Cette dernière comprenait un compartiment secret pour permettre à Duchamp de transporter les matériaux collectés pour sa Boite.
Incarnation parfaite de l’extraordinaire carrière d’artiste de Duchamp, la Boite-en-valise a traversé les âges et remet encore en question la manière dont nous appréhendons, comprenons et contextualisons l’art, comme l’explique Benjamin Buchloh: «Toutes les fonctions du musée, cette institution sociale qui transforme la dimension artistique en dimension culturelle, sont représentées dans leurs moindres détails dans cette valise: la valorisation de l’objet, l’extraction du contexte et de la fonction, la protection contre la détérioration et la dissémination du sens abstrait... [Avec cette œuvre, Duchamp] transforme également le rôle de l’artiste qui devient conservateur et collectionneur et se préoccupe donc du placement et du transport, de l’évaluation et de l’institutionnalisation, de la présentation et de la maintenance de l'œuvre d’art» (B. A literal encapsulation of Duchamp’s own take on the nature and comparative value of the work of art, his Boîte-en-valise is a portable museum and a ready-made all rolled into one. The conception of his Boîte occupied Duchamp for the period 1935-1941, a time when, appropriately, the first ideas were forming around the "isms" of recent art history, when curators and academics were together institutionalizing modern art. From the first limited deluxe edition of twenty named examples of the Boîte produced in 1941, Duchamp continued to work on the project for a further 27 years, producing a series of successive versions each characterized by a slightly different presentation in terms of contents or materials.
Of prime importance to Duchamp in the creation of the elements included in the Boîte appears to have been the quality of the reproductions. To create these, Duchamp revisited each of his works in person, making extensive notes as to their precise
colouring before commissioning their reproduction via the now somewhat obsolete techniques of collotype and hand-coloured pochoir. These handmade, time-consuming techniques deliberately blurred the boundaries between the multiple or reproduction, and the unique object. In order to underline this typical Duchampian ambiguity, the artist went further to request that a public notary
certify that several of the reproductions were, in fact, original.
The idea of the portable museum doubling as a suitcase containing the salesman’s "wares" was intimately linked to Duchamp’s own experience during the German occupation of France. In order to source the various materials needed to construct his Boîtes, Duchamp required a laisser-passer from the German authorities. He acquired this by posing, improbably, as a travelling cheese merchant, whose merchandise was transported in a specially adapted suitcase. The cheese suitcase was further adapted with a secret compartment in which Duchamp could conceal the parts of his Boîte which he had collected.
A virtuoso embodiment in an object of his equally brilliant career as an artist, Duchamp’s Boîte-en valise is a work whose importance and resonance extends beyond the artist’s own lifetime, to continue to question our ongoing appreciation, understanding and contextualization of art, as Benjamin Buchloh summarised: "All of the functions of the museum, the social institution that transforms
the primary language of art into the secondary language of culture, are minutely contained in Duchamp’s case: the valorization of the object, the extraction from context and function, the preservation from decay and the dissemination of its abstracted meaning…[With it, Duchamp] also changes the role of the artist as creator to that of the collector and conserver, who is concerned with the placement and transport, the evaluation and institutionalization, the display and maintenance of a work of art" (B.
