Lot Essay
This painting in saturated greens depicts a part of the Seine in Tournedos, a small province near Paris. The reflection of a symmetrical row of willow trees growing along the lower edge of a hill provides a strong contrast to the right hand side of the painting. The latter is dominated by lush pasture grass and wild-growing greenery. The artist's use of a diminishing perspective makes the painting very dynamic, despite its tranquil theme. As one of Vallotton's later works, this river landscape is being seen in public for the first time in fifty years within the framework of this auction.
