Auguste Rodin developed the habit of asking his models to walk around freely the studio. In the manner of engraving, his hand would then trace their outlines across a sheet of paper, and to this first contour he would then add estompe and pools of watercolour to give a sense of movement. In Le pot au lait we see the model, caught as by a photographer in an instant in time, but transformed through Rodin's characteristic approach into an image possessed of an antique aesthetic. Rodin's hand, through its series of quick passages across the paper, has grasped the model's posture, and even her serene expression is determined by a few barely perceptible lines. Occupying an undefined space, she appears to exist outside of the boundaries of time, the only references accompanying her being her tunic and the milk jug. An annotation in the lower corner of the sheet identifies the work as having a prestigious provenance, that of Madame George Bernard Shaw, to whom the artist gifted the drawing. In return, a letter of thanks for the gift and written by Charlotte Shaw forms part of the archives in the collection of the Muse Rodin, Paris.
Lors des séances à l'atelier, Auguste Rodin demande aux modèles d'évoluer en toute liberté. En guise de burin, il utilise le trait, l'estompe et les nuages d'aquarelle pour donner vie aux mouvements. Dans Le pot au lait ici présenté, comme un photographe, Rodin prend un instantané dans lequel il nous confie son attachement à l'esthétique antique. A ce moment précis, la main de l'artiste multiplie le trait pour saisir avec une grande vélocité l'attitude du modèle, tout en définissant avec synthèse un visage et une douce expression. Comble du raffinement, le modèle est placé hors du temps, sans paysage, mais pour seuls repères la tunique et le pot au lait. Notons que l'inscription dans le coin inférieur droit de la feuille confère une provenance prestigieuse à ce dessin, qui avait été dédicacé par Auguste Rodin à Madame George Bernard Shaw. Charlotte Shaw enverra d'ailleurs une lettre de remerciements à l'artiste, aujourd'hui conservée au Musée Rodin à Paris.
