La reine Salomé

"My whole ambition in the pictorial domain is to materialize the images of concrete irrationality with the most imperialistic furor of precision," Salvador Dalí declared in his text The Conquest of the Irrational (1935), "so that the world of the imagination and concrete irrationality may be of the same objective clearness, of the same consistency, of the same durability, of the same persuasive, cognoscitive and communicable thickness as that of the external world of phenomenal reality" (in H. Finkelstein, ed., The Collected Writings of Salvador Dalí, Cambridge, UK, 1998, p. 265).
Dalí introduced this precision into his painting during 1929, yielding throughout the 1930s those classic dream landscapes which stand as the high water mark of his career. While the imagery that occupies these vast, desolate spaces may strongly resist or even defy explication, the territory itself has become familiar to most anyone who dreams, arising as if from a shared collective subconscious, revealed and animated in Dalí's fastidiously detailed technique.
The drawing La reine Salomé, by contrast, is a manifestation of a far more profoundly interior and strictly personal utterance, a recounting of particular events and emotions that have welled up from currents deep within the most private domain of Dalí's experience, conjured with each exact stroke of his pencil, as only the art of finely linear and shaded drawing, without the distraction of color, might bring to perfection. The oneiric setting here is not the panoramic expanse of Dalí's native Catalunya, always warmly sublime if suggestively portentous in its emptiness, but instead the confines of a stage-like room lit only from within, half dark, airless and claustrophobic, an ominous place for revelations of a most intimate and perhaps even dire kind.
This drawing is deeply autobiographical; the pair of dramatis personae here consists of Dalí himself - as the disembodied, elastic and shaven head - and the sole true love of his life, Gala (née Elena Ivanovna Daikonova), a woman ten years the artist's senior, whom he first met in Cadaqués during August 1929, when she was thirty-five and, since 1918, married to the surrealist poet Paul Éluard. Gala was vacationing with her husband in a nearby hotel when she and Dalí plunged into a passionate affair. Éluard normally tolerated such indiscretions, and Gala had already numbered among her lovers Max Ernst (in a ménage à trois that lasted three years and extended half-way around the globe to French Indo-China), Giorgio de Chirico and Man Ray. The intensity of Dalí's liaison with Gala, however, led to the dissolution of her marriage with Éluard. In January 1934 Dalí married Gala in a civil ceremony at the Paris registry office.
Dalí has here assumed the shape of the great head propped up with crutches he depicted in his celebrated painting Le sommeil, which he completed during 1937, around the time he made the present drawing; the artist is believed to have derived the shape of the sleeping head from a rock formation located on Cap de Creus, near Cadaqués. In contrast to the painting, where the visage is completely hairless, Dalí's distinctive slim moustache is visible in the drawing. His shaven head here is very likely a reference to the terrible encounter in late 1929 when Dalí's father, disgusted with his son's dalliance with a married woman, broke off all contact and forbade him to enter the family home. "My first reaction was to cut off all my hair," Dalí wrote in his autobiography. "But I did more than this - I had my head completely shaved. I went and buried the pile of black hair in a hole I had dug on the beach for this purpose, and in which I interred at the same time the pile of empty shells of the urchins I had eaten at noon" (The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí, New York, 1942, p. 253).
Gala wears in this drawing a kind of multi-faceted beret, a more elaborately configured alternative to the cap seen in the Geodesic Portrait of Gala, 1936, in which she similarly presents only a lost-profile, averting her gaze from the artist and viewers alike. Dalí related the enveloping structural lines that comprise a geodesic dome to the structure of Gala's head and hat in a study done at the time of the painting, and to the headwear in this drawing as well.
By referring to the name Salomé in the title of this drawing, Dalí was invoking Gala in light of the fabled story of this notorious femme fatale. The Romanized Jewish historian Flavius Josephus recorded Salomé in the first century AD as the daughter of Herodias, a woman who had in defiance of Jewish law divorced her husband Herod II to marry his brother, Herod Antipas, the tetrarch of Galilée (both men were sons of Herod the Great). Salomé thus became Herod Antipas's step-daughter, and as Mark and Matthew tell in their gospels (without naming her), she danced for him, thereafter requesting as her reward the head of John-the-Baptist, whom Herod had imprisoned for vilifying his marriage to Herodias.
The poet Stéphane Mallarmé began a dramatic poem about Herodias, his Hérodiade, in 1864, but never finished it; meanwhile Gustave Flaubert published in 1877 his story Hérodias, which hereafter became the subject of Jules Massenet's opera Hérodiade in 1881. Oscar Wilde in 1891 wrote, in French, his play Salomé, which first produced in Paris in 1896. Richard Strauss made a one-act adaptation of Wilde's play to serve as the libretto for his opera Salomé, 1905, for which he composed the titillating "Dance of the Seven Veils." In 1949 Dalí created sets for a production of Strauss's Salomé at Covent Garden, London. In both the Wilde play and the Strauss opera, Salomé kisses the lips of John's severed head, and in disgust Herod has his soldiers kill her - she did live not to become a queen.
Dalí instead turned again to Josephus, who chronicled Salomé as being married to Philip (another son of Herod the Great), the tetrarch of Trachonitis. After he died childless, Salomé married Aristobolus, King of Chalcis, becoming his queen. By merging the characters of Herodias and Salomé, women who both had two husbands in succession, Dalí was pondering the fact that Gala, too, had exchanged one man for another - Éluard for himself. The artist's visage in this drawing appears crumpled and desultory, as if he were beset with uncertainty and guilt. Gala was well-known in the surrealist circle for wielding an irresistibly domineering and even destructive influence on the men in her life. The artist is also perhaps alluding here to a crisis his marriage had undergone in 1936, when he entered into a homoerotic relationship with the English surrealist collector Edward James. Gala had attempted to suppress this tendency in her husband's behavior. The metallic rods that connect Dalí and Gala in La reine Salomé, poking and nearly skewering them, aptly symbolize a sadomasochistic dimension in their relationship, insofar as Dalí experienced it, in the ecstasy and torment of his love for Gala.
There is on the sheet at lower left a dedication which Dalí applied in 1957 to Joseph Forêt, his friend and the publisher of his graphic work, inscribed and signed "avec tout l'espoir dans nos imperialismes spirituels frères Salvador Dalí."

Dalí introduit cette notion de précision dans sa peinture au cours de l'année 1929 et produit tout au long des années 1930 ces paysages oniriques qui constituent le sommet de sa carrière. Si l'imagerie de ces vastes espaces désolés sembl résister à toute explication, le territoire lui-même est familier à quiconque rêve, comme s'il naissait d'un inconscient collectif partagé, révélé et animé par la technique minutieusement détaillée de Dalí.
La reine Salomé, au contraire, est l'expression d'une affirmation beaucoup plus profondément intérieure et plus personnelle, le récit d'événements et d'émotions surgis des profondeurs les plus intimes de l'expérience de Dalí, évoqués par chaque trait de son crayon. Le cadre onirique n'est pas l'étendue panoramique de la Catalogne natale de l'artiste, toujours sublime mais dont le vide sous-tend une sorte de menace, mais le recoin d'une chambre semblable à une scène, éclairée seulement de l'intérieur.
Ce dessin est profondément autobiographique; les personnages ici sont Dalí lui-même - la tête au crâne rasée, élastique, sans corps - et le seul véritable amour de sa vie, Gala (née Elena Ivanovna Daikonova), de dix ans son ainée. Ils se rencontrent à Cadaqués au mois d'août 1929, elle a alors 35 ans et est mariée depuis 1918 au poète Paul Éluard. Gala est en vacances avec son mari dans un hôtel de la région, quand elle et Dalí entament une relation passionnée. Éluard se montre généralement tolérant de ses aventures, et Gala compte déjà parmi ses amants Max Ernst (leur ménage à trois a duré trois ans et parcouru la moitié du monde jusqu'en Indochine), Giorgio de Chirico et Man Ray. L'intensité de la liaison entre Gala et Dalí aboutit cependant à la fin de son mariage avec Éluard. En janvier 1934, Dalí et Gala se marient civilement à Paris.
Dalí se représente ici sous la forme de la grande tête soutenue par des béquilles, apparaissant également de son célèbre tableau Le Sommeil, achevé en 1937. La forme de cette tête endormie serait inspirée d'une formation rocheuse située sur le Cap de Creus, près de Cadaqués. Contrairement au tableau où le visage est entièrement glabre, sur le dessin on peut voir la fine moustache caractéristique de Dalí. Sa tête rasée est une référence très probable à une scène terrible avec son père survenue à la fin de l'année 1929, lorsque celui-ci, scandalisé par son aventure avec une femme mariée, rompt tout contact avec lui et lui interdit la maison familiale."Ma première réaction fut de me couper entièrement les cheveux" écrit Dalí dans son autobiographie."Mais je fis encore plus. Je me rasai la tête, puis j'enterrai ma chevelure sacrifiée avec les coquilles vides des oursins mangés à midi" (La Vie secrète de Salvador Dalí).
Dans ce dessin, Gala porte une sorte de béret à pans multiples, une forme plus élaborée du chapeau de Géodésique, Portrait de Gala, 1936, où elle ne montre qu'un profil détournant le regard à la fois de Dalí et des spectateurs. Dalí établit un lien entre les lignes enveloppantes qui forment un dôme géodésique et la forme de la tête et du chapeau de Gala dans une étude pour le tableau de 1936, ainsi que dans le présent dessin.
En faisant référence à Salomé dans le titre de l'oeuvre, Dalí présente ici Gala à la lumière de l'histoire de la célèbre femme fatale. L'historien de Salomé, datant du premier siècle avant notre ère, nous est contée par Flavius Josèphe: sa mère d'Hérodias divorça de son mari Hérode II au mépris des lois juives, pour épouser le frère de celui-ci, Hérode Antipas, tétrarque de Galilée. Salomé devient donc la belle-fille d'Hérode Antipas et comme le racontent Marc et Matthieu dans leurs évangiles (sans la nommer), elle danse pour lui et exige comme récompense la tête de Jean-Baptiste, qu'Hérode a emprisonné pour l'avoir critiqué pour son mariage avec Hérodias.
Le poète Stéphane Mallarmé commence un poème dramatique sur Hérodias, son Hérodiade, en 1864, mais ne l'achève jamais; pendant ce temps Gustave Flaubert publie Hérodias en 1877, qui devient le sujet de l'opéra de Jules Massenet Hérodiade en 1881. Richard Strauss adapte la pièce de Wilde en un acte et l'utilise comme livret de son opéra de 1905, Salomé, pour lequel il compose la sensuelle "Danse des sept voiles". En 1949 Dalí crée les décors de la Salomé de Strauss à Covent Garden à Londres. Dans la pièce de Wilde et dans l'opéra de Strauss, Salomé baise les lèvres de la tête tranchée de Jean-Baptiste et Hérode horrifié la fait tuer par ses soldats, elle ne devient donc jamais reine.
Dalí lui revient à Flavius Josèphe, qui mentionne Salomé comme étant mariée à Philippe (autre fils d'Hérode le Grand), tétrarque de Trachonitide. Après la mort sans descendance de celui-ci, Salomé épouse Aristobole, roi de Calchis et devient reine. En mélangeant les personnages d'Hérodias et de Salomé, qui toutes deux ont deux maris successivement, Dalí évoque le passage de Gala d'un d'homme à l'autre, d'Éluard à lui. Le visage de l'artiste dans ce dessin parait décousu et irrégulier, en proie peut-être à l'incertitude et au doute. Gala était connue dans les milieux surréalistes pour son influence irrésistiblement dominatrice et même destructrice sur les hommes de sa vie. L'artiste fait peut être allusion à une crise intervenue dans son couple en 1936, lorsqu'il a une aventure homosexuelle avec le collectionneur anglais des surréalistes Edward James. Gala a essayé de réprimer cette tendance du comportement de son mari. Les tiges métalliques qui relient Dalí et Gala dans La reine Salomé, les piquent jusqu'à presque les transpercer, symbolisent une dimension sadomasochiste de leur relation, telle que la ressent Dalí, dans l'extase et le tourment de son amour pour Gala..
Dalí a dédicédé cette oeuvre à Joseph Forêt, son ami et éditeur de son oeuvre graphite.
