L'accident forms part of a suite of seven drawings which FélixVallotton executed between 1893 and 1894. Grouped together under the title Paris Intense the works were due to be reproduced as lithographs - indeed it is rare for one of these original drawings to come to market as opposed to the printed version. Paris Intense was borne out of Vallotton's interest in observing the frenetic nature of modern life as witnessed everyday on the streets of Paris. Each scene is shown from the viewpoint of an observer, both physically and psychologically removed from direct interaction with the scene either by the placement of a barrier to hold back the crowd (Box Office), or a levitated viewpoint (Parading through the streets in Single File). Of the series, L'accident is by far the most theatrical and emotionally-laden of the scenes, depicting as it does the moment when a pedestrian falls under the legs of an oncoming horse and carriage. As with many of his ink drawings executed in anticipation of a print, the artist has simplified form and in so doing gives the image a boldness and authority not seen so clearly elsewhere in the artist's oeuvre. In this drawing for L'accident Vallotton has paid particular attention to creating contrasts of surface detail, thus adapting his work to the strengths of the lithographic medium. The artist has worked in details requiring a sense of surface in pencil - the streaked road surface and certain elements of clothing of the spectators - in contrast to the India ink areas which create a sense of flatness more characteristic of Vallotton's contribution to the Nabis aesthetic.


L'Accident fait partie d'un ensemble de sept dessins réalisés par Vallotton entre 1893 et 1894. Regroupés sous le titre Paris Intense, ils devaient être reproduits sous formes de lithographies, il est tout à fait rare que l'un de ces dessins originaux passe en vente, contrairement à la version imprimée. Paris Intense est né de l'intérêt de Vallotton pour l'observation de la nature frénétique de la vie moderne qu'il voit chaque jour dans les rues de Paris. Chaque scène est montrée du point de vue d'un observateur physiquement et psychologiquement éloigné de toute interaction avec la scène, par une barrière destinée à retenir la foule (Deuxième bureau) ou en le plaçant en hauteur (Le monôme). De cette série, L'Accident est de loin la scène la plus théâtrale et la plus chargée d'émotion, montrant le moment où un piéton tombe entre les jambes d'un cheval attelé d'une voiture. Comme pour beaucoup de ses dessins à l'encre destinés à être gravés , l'artiste simplifie la forme et donne ainsi à l'image une audace et un pouvoir qu'on ne retrouve pas aussi clairement ailleurs dans son oeuvre. Dans son dessin pour L'Accident Vallotton accorde une attention particulière aux contrastes créés dans les détails de la surface, adaptant ainsi son travail aux spécificités du support lithographique. L'artiste a travaillé au crayon certains détails, la surface striée de la route et quelques éléments de vêtements des spectateurs, qui contrastent avec les zones à l'encre de Chine qui créent une sensation de plat plus caractéristique du travail de Vallotton dans l'esprit de l'esthétique Nabis.
