In 1933, after seven years in Paris, Calder returns to America to settle with his wife Louisa in a newly purchased eighteenth-century farmhouse in Roxbury, Connecticut. Indeed during the war the Connecticut woods turn out to be full of Surrealists, whom Calder met and became friends with earlier in Paris, including André Breton, André Masson and Peter Blume. In 1941, after visiting the Calders in Roxbury and liking the countryside landscape around, Yves Tanguy and his wife Kay Sage in their turn choose to settle nearby in Woodbury and thus old surrealist friends become Connecticut neighbors.
It is precisely to this Tanguy-Sage household that makes reference the present drawing titled Je suis surréaliste jusqu’à Woodbury. In fact, it was executed during the few months that the Calders lived there in 1944, while their own Roxbury farmhouse, partially destroyed by fire a year before, was being repaired. Thus the influence of Tanguy is evident in this piece as it enters a dialogue with the anthropomorphic tendencies of Calder’s Surrealist peer.
On the borderline between Surrealism and abstraction, the drawing’s delicate lines recall Tanguy’s atmospheric landscapes with these smooth, sandwatch shaped stones and improbable living creatures shooting up cheerfully against a flat, white background. The curvilinear black palette, which is so crucial to the ingenious balance of Calder’s early organic and biomorphic sculptures, plays an equally important role in this drawing, grounding its balance of colors. Significantly inspired by the nature surrounding Woodbury, Calder depicts the flora and fauna in an explicitly figurative way, which is a characteristic trait of his works from this period. As Jed Perl states it, “the natural world comes into Calder's work not literally, but metaphorically, as a stream of associations and analogies" (J. Perl, ‘Calder's Imagination,’ in Calder: Sculptor of Air, exh. cat., Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome, 2009, p. 18 and 26).
Such metaphorical and imaginative interpretations of the natural world evoke both the humor of Dada and the alternative realities of the surreal. By entitling the work Je suis surréaliste jusqu’à Woodbury Calder declares his everlasting bond with Surrealism and his Surrealist friends, even though at that moment he is standing at the threshold of a new period of his career. Indeed, as James Johnson Sweeney claimed, 1944 marked a crucial transition in Calder’s oeuvre as it put an end to his early career and initiated the most fertile and creative period of his mature life.
En 1933, après sept ans passés à Paris, Calder retourne aux États-Unis pour s’installer avec son épouse Louisa à Roxbury, Connecticut, dans une ferme du XVIIIe siècle qu’il vient d’acquérir. Pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, les bois du Connecticut abritent de nombreux surréalistes, avec lesquels Calder s’est lié d’amitié à Paris, y compris André Breton, André Masson et Peter Blume. Ainsi l'influence de Tanguy y est évidente, et se retrouve notamment dans la représentation de formes anthropomorphes.
A la frontière entre le surréalisme et l'abstraction, ce dessin rappelle par ses lignes délicates les paysages atmosphériques de Tanguy, avec ses pierres lisses en forme de sablier et ses étonnantes créatures se dressant gaiement sur le fond blanc. L’usage du noir, si crucial pour l'équilibre subtil des premières sculptures de Calder, joue un rôle tout aussi important pour l’équilibre de ce dessin. Considérablement inspiré par la nature environnante de Woodbury, Calder représente ici la flore et la faune d'une manière résolument figurative, ce qui caractérise les œuvres de cette période.
