This painting Toskanischer Garten, 1912 by Augusto Giacometti was made in 1912, the year that marked the beginning of Giacometti's orientation towards a style of painting that had evolved out of neoimpressionism. The palette knife technique used by the artist in this painting was one he often chose to use until 1917. Giacometti covered large areas of canvas by placing greens, reds, blues and violets next to each other, like mosaic stones, as can be seen in this important work, with the result that, in certain areas, the canvas shines through, and the thickly applied colour gives the painting - so-called all-over-patterning - and create a sense of great lightness. This concentration of thickly applied patches of colour enabled Giacometti to create an impression of space. The steps in the centre of the painting invite the viewer to take a walk through the garden.
Augusto Giacometti was regarded as a pioneer of abstract Swiss Art and, with his tachistic works, he was at the very forefront of the international art scene. He anticipated innovations that were adopted world-wide after 1945.
