Provenance
Reginald Edwin Anthony Ray joined the Indian Police in Bengal in 1910, and worked his way up the ranks in the Intelligence Division of the Bengal Police, eventually becoming Commissioner of Police in Calcutta from 1943 to 1946, when he retired to England through ill health. He brought home with him three paintings by Jamini Roy, which he had acquired directly from the artist at his studio during his time in Calcutta. This painting is the last of the collection remaining in the family.
