"Meine Stillleben trocknen tagsüber still vor sich hin, und ich male in aller Ruhe an der Serie weiter. Zunehmend finde ich an Aufgaben, die ich früher noch als kindisch abgetan hätte, das raffinierteste Vergnügen. Mehr denn je amüsiert mich die Dingwelt; die Vollendung eines Eies, die Weichheit einer Tomate, das Geschmiedete einer Hortensie liefern genügend Probleme, die ihrer Lösung harren. Ich packe sie ohne Pedanterie an und versuche, möglichst Maler zu bleiben" notierte Félix Vallotton im August 1919 - wenige Monate vor Vollendung unseres Stilllebens Fleurs et fraises - in sein Tagebuch (Félix Vallotton, Documents pour une biographie et pour l'histoire d'une oeuvre, Lausanne 1975, S. 245).
Tatsächlich setzte sich der Künstler bis zu Beginn der zwanziger Jahre nur vereinzelt mit dem Stillleben auseinander. Erst in seinen letzten Lebensjahren entstanden zahlreiche Stillleben, darunter auch dieses marktfrische Fleurs et fraises.
"My still lifes dry during the day while I quietly continue with the series. I increasingly discover the most refined pleasure in tasks, which, in my early days, would have seemed childish to me. More and more I take pleasure in the world of things; the perfection of an egg, the plumpness of a tomato, the intricate shapes of a hydrangea give me plenty of problems awaiting a solution. I approach them without pedantry and try hard to remain a painter," recorded Félix Vallotton in his diary in August 1919 - a few months before the completion of our still life Fleurs et fraises. As a matter of fact, the artist dealt with still lifes only sporadically until the beginning of the twenties. Vallotton created numerous still lifes only during his last years of life, including this fresh-to-the-market Fleurs et fraises.
