LOTS 3172-3173 FROM A NORTH AMERICAN CHINESE COLLECTION The original owner Dr. C. F. Chen met Xu Beihong in his thirties and became life-long friends until the artist's death. Magpie and Plum Blossoms was a gift from the artist with a dedication to Dr. C. F. Chen and his wife, Zhihua. Dr. C.F. Chen came to Hong Kong to work for government hospitals starting from 1948. He was the Chief Officer in Lai Chi Kok Hospital from 1950-1958, and was promoted to Tung Wah Eastern Hospital superintendent between 1958-1959 until his retirement from government services in 1959. Dr. Chen went into private practice, with an office on 627 Nathan Road until he passed away in 1966.
