Am 17. Juni 1918 reiste Félix Vallotton, begleitet von seinem schwedischen Sammler Axel Ullern, nach Berville. Insgesamt entstanden während dieses Aufenthalts drei Werke, neben dem Landschaftsgemälde 'Quai de Berville' weiter 'Bateau amarré à Berville' sowie 'La Seine vue des hauteurs de Berville'.
Berville-sur-mer ist eine französische Gemeinde in der Region Haute-Normandie. Berville liegt direkt an der Seine, unmittelbar bevor diese bei Honfleur in den Ärmelkanal mündet. Unweit von Berville-sur-mer, auf der Anhöhe von Equemauville, hatte Vallotton im Jahr 1901 zum ersten Mal den Sommer in der Villa Beaulieu verbracht. Ab 1909 kehrte der Künstler regelmässig an diese Produktions- und Inspirationsstätte zurück. Die Rückkehr nach Equemauville bedeutete für Félix Vallotton gleichzeitig eine Rückkehr seiner Landschaftsmalerei. Es entstanden dort die sogenannten 'paysages composés', die das reifere Werk des Künstlers kennzeichnen.
On 17 June 1918 Félix Vallotton, accompanied by his Swedish collector Axel Ullern, travelled to Berville. Altogether three works developed during this stay. Beside the landscape painting 'Quai de Berville', Vallotton painted 'Bateau amarré à Berville' as well as 'La Seine vue des hauteurs de Berville'.
Berville-sur-mer is a French community in the Upper Normandy region. It is located directly on the Seine, immediately before it flows into the English Channel at Honfleur. Not far from Berville-sur-mer, on the hill of Equemauville, Vallotton had spent the summer of 1901 in the Villa Beaulieu for the first time. Starting from 1909 the artist returned regularly to this production and inspiration place. The return to Equemauville meant a return of his landscape painting at the same time for Félix Vallotton. Developed there were the so-called 'paysages composés,' which mark the more mature work of the artist.
