Lot Essay

In 1963 Philipson went to the United States to paint at Boulder in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains as visiting professor of painting at the University of Colorado. During this time he was drawn to the images of the indigenous Indian culture. The present work is an example of this influence and is stylistically similar to Philipson's The Burning held at the National Galleries of Scotland.
