Lot Essay

This unsigned (because he did not want to spoil the simplicity of it) collage with oil paint (using hand ground colour with a wax medium) was painted at Horsemoor Studio, Chieveley, Newbury, Berkshire (later bought by Francis Bacon) after the artist had returned from his year-long drawing voyage around the world in 1958-1959 (see Harbours, Girls and a Slumbering World, Mudlark Press). He had found that after completing over a thousand drawings it was difficult to return to painting. Simple collages seemed to be the interim way forward. This collage is one of those.
