Au cours des années 1880 et 1890, la rue, les passants, les mouvements de la vie parisienne sont une inépuisable source d'inspiration pour Bonnard. Véritable flâneur, il aime parcourir la ville, s'imprégner du charme champêtre de Montmartre, "enregistrer" mentalement des images de cette vie urbaine qu'il reproduit ensuite, de mémoire, dans son atelier.
Le présent tableau, réalisé en 1895, est caractéristique de l'esthétique Nabi. La silhouette du personnage, traitée par aplats et aux contours soulignés par un cerne marron, semble se découper de l'arrière-plan, tout comme son ombre projetée sur le mur. Son traitement fait écho aux estampes japonaises que Bonnard affectionne particulièrement et qui lui vaudront d'être surnommé par ses amis "le Nabi Japonard". Le cadrage, quasi photographique, confère à la scène une impression de mouvement et une grande modernité, comme si l'artiste avait saisi l'instant où le modèle passait dans son champ de vision. During the 1880s and 1890s, the hustle and bustle of Parisian city life and its passers-by were an endless source of inspiration for Pierre Bonnard. A true flâneur, ambling through the wide boulevards and at others times taking in the country-like charm of Montmartre, the painter mentally recorded images of this city life he later reproduced from memory in his studio.
The present work, painted in 1895, is emblematic of the Nabi aesthetic. The figure's silhouette, treated with flat areas of colour and defined by a black outline, is set off from the background as well as from his shadow cast on the wall. This treatment echoes the Japanese prints Bonnard so greatly admired, and for which he had earned himself the affectionate nickname "le Nabi Japonard". The near photographic framing of the subject lends movement to the scene, the artist capturing the moment his subject entered his field of vision.
The palette, limited but full of subtle nuances, matte yet luminous, reinforces the feeling of melancholy which seems to be seizing the character. Devoid of any pathos and with a very graphic execution, Bonnard produces with a great deal of emotion a social portrait of rare intensity.
