TRUMAN'S COLD WAR TEAM IN PLACE, IN THE FATEFUL YEAR OF THE KOREAN WAR and the escalating arms race with the Soviets. The Berlin Airlift crisis was only a few months past, and within weeks Truman would announce U. S. plans to build a hydrogen bomb. Key personnel changes had recently taken place as well. After James Forrestal's suicide Louis Johnson took the helm at the Pentagon. George C. Marshall's retirement opened the way for Dean Acheson to become the nation's chief diplomat. In June of 1950 the cold war would turn hot in Korea. This is the team the President had by his side during this tense period.
