At South Kensington, drawings and watercolours by a diverse range of artists dating from the 16th to the 19th century are offered, with estimates ranging from £600 to £50,000. Highlights include a charming group of 18th century portraits by John Downman, one of Turner’s greatest vignettes illustrating Milton’s Fall of the Rebel Angels and a collection of watercolours by William Payne from Blair Castle in outstanding condition.
The sale also features a rare group of Spanish drawings from the collection of Sir William Stirling Maxwell Bt. (1818–1878). Works from the Maxwell MacDonald family collection will also be offered in our Old Master Prints sale at King Street on 9 December.
