Cabinet des livres de Pierre Brossette

Cabinet des livres de Pierre Brossette

Sale Overview

Christie’s Paris Rare Books and Manuscripts department is honored to offer for sale Le Cabinet des Livres de Pierre Brossette – a collection of exceptional books spanning from the 18th to the 20th centuries. From Rousseau to Breton, through the library of Empress Marie-Louise, to artists' books illustrated by PicassoMatisse and Miró, this collection traces an entire chapter in the history of the book. For each title, the best copy: La Chartreuse de Parme bound for the Duchess of Parma, the imperial colorized copy of La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Oudry, precious copies of Flaubert's books inscribed to George Sand on L'éducation sentimentale or to Maupassant on La tentation de Saint-Antoine, or Paul Éluard's copy of L'Air de l'eau enriched with original preparatory drawings by Giacometti. With such prestigious provenances come the finest bindings – a Rose Adler binding on Matisse's Jazz, and the entire career of Paul Bonet retraced through the copies, including the mythical series of photographic bindings from 1934. Bonet produced eight of these bindings, two of which are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The Brossette collection holds three of them, including the very first, on the copy of Nadja offered by Breton to René Char, enriched with a drawing and a letter from Nadja herself: perhaps the ultimate surrealist bibliophile object.
