American Avant-Garde: The James D. Zellerbach Residence by Frances Elkins

Sale Overview

Christie’s New York presents American Avant-Garde: The James D. Zellerbach residence by Frances Elkins. This historic sale of iconic designs from the celebrated Pacific Heights mansion in San Francisco, California, encompasses rare and unique works by 20th century design masters Alberto Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank and Emilio Terry. Principal rooms of the commission, such as the Card Room and the Bar, showcase designs by Frances Elkins as well, offering a unique opportunity to explore Elkins's masterful eye at pre-war American modernism. The sale of over 30 lots is coming to auction for the first time, the items all having remained in the residence since their 1937 placement.

Early highlights are available for preview at Christie’s Paris from 6 to 16 March.

Further programming in Chicago in April will be followed by the pre-sale exhibition at Christie’s New York Rockefeller Center galleries from 6 to 12 June. The auction takes place on 12 June, 2025
